8 days kilimanjaro lemosho route

8 DAYS KILIMANJARO - LEMOSHO ROUTE

Lemosho Route Description

The Lemosho Route is a very beautiful and unspoiled route and sightings of wild game in the forest section is possible. The Lemosho route is one of the quieter routes up Kilimanjaro, this advantage however disappears when the route combines with the Machame route on the 3rd day of the hike.

For those seeking a quiet route away from the crowds, the route is a superior option to the Rongai route. Unlike Rongai the Lemosho route has the same excellent pro-acclimatization features of the Machame route, which it joins just before reaching Lava Tower.

Hiking the Lemosho route during the rainy season as the start point of the Lemosho Route is particularly inaccessible during the wet season. Climbers should be prepared to walk the final 2 kilometers of the road. During the raining season the drop off can be in different points and the climbers have to walk to the starting point.

The route descents along the Mweka Route, a descent-only route.

    Londorossi Gate (2250 m) – Forest Camp (2,750 m), walking time about 5 hours.

Shortly after the gate of the dense mountain rain forest, the broad way is to start soon narrower and more humid; the increase hampered by wet roots begins. Lonely leads the stage right up to the so-called Forest Camp

  • Day 2

Forest Camp (2750m) – Shira Camp One (3500 m) Walking time about 5 hours.

The first part of the stage leads back through the green rain forest; the trees are covered with colorful lichens. A little later, the vegetation changes rapidly – the forest is achieved lights and soon the moor and heather zone. Again and again provide good distant views of Mt Meru and Kibo, the summit massive of Kilimanjaro. The terrain is rocky and dry, and in the early afternoon the vast plateau of the Shira plateau is reached.

  • Day 3

Shira Camp One (3500 m) – Shira Plateau, or Shira Camp Two (3880 m) Walking time about 6 hours.

Length of the barely visible trail leads across moorland of Shira Plateau, later starts a dry high desert where only grow isolated large Seneca’s. In clear weather, the full extent of the rugged Shira massive can be seen – in the course of the day, however, the vision becomes cloudy mostly a by rising from the rain forest moisture.

  • Day 4

    Shira Plateau (3880 m) – Barranco plateau (3980 m) Walking time 5.5-7 hours.

The accent through the dark, almost vegetation-free gravel desert of lava rock. With a bit of luck here the Kili shows for the first time up close! The path leads up to just below the Lava Tower (up to about 4450 m) and then down into the Barranco Valley. Here is an additional rest and acclimatization recommended!

  • Day 5

    Barranco plateau (3980 m) – Karanga Camp (4033 m), walking time about 3 – 4 hours.

The accent from the Barranco Valley, past the mighty Western Breach wall to the Karanga Camp. you spend the last tenth night before the summit.

  • Day 6

    Karanga plateau (4033 m) – Barafu Camp (4673 m), walking time about 3 hours.

Today we take the Traverse Route that takes up the Barafu Ridge; we walk up quite slowly to the final camp before your last ascent day to the summit. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.

  • Day 7

    Barafu Camp (4673 m) – Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – Mweka Camp (3068 m).

Hiking time Barafu Camp – crater rim: 5.5-7 hours Crater Rim – Uhuru Peak: 1.5 hours Uhuru Peak – Barafu Camp: 2.5-3 hours Barafu Camp – Mweka Camp: 3-4 hours

Between midnight and two clock of departure for the strenuous climb over steep screed and snowfields done and rock steps to the crater rim (5680 m). At sunrise the crater rim is reached – it offers a fantastic panoramic view in the Maasai Steppe and Mt Meru! 200 m are set back from here; past the remains of the glacier stages it goes in serpentine up to 5895 m high Uhuru Peak and after a rise time of about 8 hours is the highest point in Africa reached! Descent: Only on the normal route up to Stella Point, from here down to Barafu Camp (4600 m) and on to the Mweka Camp.

  • Day 8

Mweka camp (3068 m) – Mweka Gate (1800m) Hiking time approx. 5 hours

The path leads to a mostly wet, slippery path through the dense cloud forest steeply downhill to Mweka Gate. Transport back to your hotel or lodge.
